It's never too late! Want to learn to play the piano as an adult?

Updated: Dec 25, 2024

Absolutely, yes! The key question is how quickly you progress and how much time you take to do it. Adults learn the piano differently than children. As an adult beginner, you should be aware that learning is not slower or more difficult, but simply different. While children often approach playing the piano in a playful and intuitive way, adults tend to want to understand what they are doing first. In addition, they do not learn in a linear way, but build on their experiences. If an adult wants to learn an instrument to fulfill a long-held dream, the piano is an excellent choice. Keyboard instruments such as the piano are particularly suitable for beginners because the notes are arranged linearly and pressing the keys does not require any special fine-tuning of intonation. However, adults are often impatient and expect rapid progress. It should not be forgotten that children and young people also have to invest a lot of time and practice to reach a high level on their instrument. Patience and regular practice are essential for all learners, regardless of age.

As an adult, you often make decisions based on rational considerations that can lead to thoughts like these:

  • Am I not too old for this?

  • Didn’t all pianists start playing the piano at a young age?

  • Doesn't the ability to learn decrease with age?

  • Do I even have enough time and stamina?

  • Where can I learn to play the piano as an adult?

Such considerations prevent many adults from trying to play the piano. But that doesn't have to be the case! Of course, you can learn to play the piano as an adult. It will be different than when you were six, but it also has many positive aspects.

In summary, for most adults, the key to successful and enjoyable piano learning is a relaxed approach. While a certain amount of ambition is important to make progress, if you are too determined and expect too much of yourself, you run the risk of losing the joy of learning. In such moments, it helps to remind yourself: "I am doing this for myself, at my own pace and in my own way." With this attitude and a teacher who supports it, you have the best conditions for success as an adult piano beginner.
