Is it possible to learn to play the piano as an adult?

Absolutely, yes! The key question is how quickly you progress and how much time you spend on it. Adults learn the piano differently than children. As an adult beginner, you should be aware that learning is not slower or more difficult, but simply different. While children often approach playing the piano in a playful and intuitive way, adults tend to want to understand what they are doing first. In addition, they do not learn in a linear way, but build on their experiences. If an adult wants to learn an instrument to fulfill a long-held dream, the piano is an excellent choice. Keyboard instruments such as the piano are particularly suitable for beginners because the notes are arranged linearly and pressing the keys does not require any special fine-tuning of intonation. However, adults are often impatient and expect rapid progress. It should not be forgotten that children and young people also have to invest a lot of time and practice to reach a high level on their instrument. Patience and regular practice are essential for all learners, regardless of age.

How often should I practice piano?

It depends on your musical goals, the time you have available and how quickly you want to achieve your goals. It is important to have clear goals in mind when practicing. From my own experience, I would say that patience is the most important prerequisite for a successful practice process. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, it is important to follow a structured practice plan.

For adult beginners

In general, I recommend that adults practice for about 30 minutes several times a week to make continuous progress. Of course, it would be ideal to find time to play the piano every day, but this is often unrealistic as adults usually have work commitments, children and many other activities in their daily lives. To start with, 30 minutes a few times a week is enough.

For children

As everyone knows: the more the merrier! Nevertheless, I will give you some rough guidelines to get you started.

For students who want to reach a high level in the long term and play the piano professionally, we recommend practicing twice a week for 20-30 minutes each time. After a few years, when the love of music and piano playing has been successfully instilled and the repertoire has become more demanding, practice should be increased to several days a week for 30-45 minutes each. The more time and commitment you then invest, the faster you will progress and master more demanding pieces. With success, the joy of making music also grows. This means: the more you play, the more fun and fulfillment you will have.
